What is Medicine?

My healing really started when I internalized a couple of principles of naturopathic medicine.

The Body is the Ultimate Healer

Western medicine treats only the symptoms. It neglects finding the root cause, and never treats the whole person. To fight against it I see a lot of people searching for herbal substitutes. An herb that will do the same thing, but better, and with less consequences than western medicine. Unfortunately, this is the same allopathic approach as western medicine, just using herbal supplements.

Western medicine strong arms the body into submission. Naturopathic mecidine embraces the wisdom of the body.

We need to give the body the optimal environment, all the nutrients it needs, and some guidance with herbs and other techniques so that the body can do what it's already trying to do: heal itself.

That is true naturapathic medicine at its best.

Why the Solution Informs the Problem

There are trillions upon trillions of biochemical reactions and pathways happening throughout your body all day, and each one of them requires a vitamin, mineral, or intermediate compound to be able to happen. So what happens when you start running out of some of those nutrients? The biochemical pathways start to bottleneck, like cars stalled at a train crossing. The flow gets interrupted. We can also see that many of the challenges we face are not random or unfixable—they arise because the body is missing key building blocks, which means they can be supported and often corrected through targeted nutrition.

Naturopathic medicine recognizes that when countless systems are working overtime, it's often more effective to support the body as a whole. By providing individualized nutrition and care, we empower the body to heal itself.

How does the body get nutrients?

Digestion, of course!

The first step is simple: eat more of the nutrients you’re missing and less of the foods that throw you off balance. But if your digestion isn’t working properly, your body can’t absorb those nutrients.

Most people today struggle with digestion due to stress, processed foods, depleted soils, and long-term nutrient gaps. Bloating, cravings, bad breath, constipation, or diarrhea are all signs your body isn’t getting what it needs—and that harmful bacteria and inflammation may be adding more stress.

That’s why nearly every traditional healing system begins with digestion—and why it’s the second pillar I focus on.

Uniqueness

How the body responds to nutrient imbalances is different for everyone.

For me, it showed up as years of crippling anxiety and depression. For others, it may be heart issues, arthritis, thyroid problems, or skin conditions. The same deficiency—like low zinc—can affect different systems depending on each person’s vulnerabilities, such as ezcema in one person, or anxiety in another person.

What once seemed “too good to be true” now makes perfect sense: nutrients fuel countless reactions in the body, so even one imbalance can ripple out in many ways. This understanding has given me both hope and compassion—for myself and for others on their health journeys.

What about Detoxing?

Your body is always working to detox—that much most people know. But without the right nutrients, it can get overwhelmed and start storing heavy metals, pollutants, and toxins. With proper support, though, the body has what it needs to package and release those stored substances.

With proper nutritive and supplemental support, though, the body has what it needs to package and release those stored substances.
